Fishing Spider (Dolmedes sp.)

Took some time off from work Tuesday afternoon. This kids and I decided we were going to the Ramapo river to catch crayfish and salamanders. When we got to the river, it was much higher, faster and muddier than typical from the last couple of weeks of rain. So much for catching crawdads!

Instead we pretended I was a zombie that the boys dispatched with sticks fashioned into (what else?) firearms. We turned over logs in search of insects and worms. We also found a few dead, rotting trees that we knocked over. I loved doing this as a kid & Reed & Hunter were digging it too!

We knocked over one tree that proved to be hollow and within it caught maybe the biggest spider I have ever seen in NJ. Looks like a fishing spider, genus, Dolmedes. This was a female carrying around its egg sack.

Kept it overnight and took a few photos in the morning and then released it back down by the river.

When Reed realized I was going to release her he asked, "Dad, can we go and visit her at the river?"

Seattle

Dear Reed and Hunter,

Just boarded another redeye at the end of another biz trip. A few days away from my beautiful boys and the great happiness they bring me.

If all goes well, in 12 hours I will see you both again.

Trying to bring an end to these absences as I am missing what is surely the best and happiest time I will ever have.

Looking forward to my two-boy hug.

Tick Bite Update

This bite is not evolving like a Lyme's bite would and Hunter (like Reed yesterday) now has a fever so it looks as if this was a false alarm.

Tick Bite?

Is this this a bite from a tick carrying Lyme's Disease? Noticed bite on Reed's arm Friday and it has blossomed since. We never saw what bit him. Kind of looks like the bite I rec'd before I was diagnosed with Lyme's...but I don't think I took any photos. This isn't a classical presentation of the bulls-eye sign but mine wasn't either. Reed's fever was up to 103˚F today...I had a fever after the bite and developed a bizarre rash on one side of my face.

Reed will go to the Dr. tomorrow...but it takes a couple of weeks to get the antibodies they test for...more to come. I am not alarmed, BTW, we caught it early and Reed will be fine.

Sleeping in Their Own Beds Again

I am lucky, no, we are lucky to have as thoughtful and as driven a Mom and wife as Mechelle.

The boys are sleeping alone in their own beds again. If I was managing this facet of their lives we'd be sharing beds for another couple of years. Mechelle made it happen in a week. Amazing.

I will miss those little arms hugging me in the night and the sounds of little chests breathing. I won't however, miss the unexpected kicks in the junk.

Kids' Circus

The pre-school (makes more sense than pre-owned, eh?) Reed goes to held a kids' circus. Reed dressed up as a clown and delivered his radiant S-E grin when he came out and saw Mom, Dad, Hunter, Grandma Helen and Grandpa JD. Really cute and happy occasion! Hunter got into the spirit and grabbed a couple of hats.
